In Poe’s 1843 short story the black cat is the betrayer of a man’s guilt, haunting him until the end. The Scottish have tale of a black cat visiting your home which prosperity follows. Black cats are also considered lucky in Britain and Japan.
In Western mythology however the black cat is the harbinger of fear, the familiar of witches, and the symbol of misfortune. The most popular mythology is that of one crossing your path, one that in equal measure across the whole of the earth is both a sign of good luck AND a bad tiding.
